Welcome: Content Nurse Writer for Your Vocational Nursing Program

Susan Wessman

Eighteen years ago, I graduated from San Jacinto Nursing Program in Houston, TX. Seems like only yesterday. When I look at my graduation picture, I am still amazed about the experience and how this was going to change my life forever. I still have my Florence Nightingale lamp.

I was called into nursing. I prayed long and hard, asking for God’s clarification that was where He wanted me. I did not want this decision my decision; I wanted His, and He made it clear.

As a Christian nurse, I could not have made it without God’s help and guidance. I experienced a lot of things I never dreamed of; had it not been for God’s spirit and help, and calming my nerves, I don’t know what I would have done.

You see, I made a huge mistake during my next to the last clinical that my instructor should have dropped me for. It wasn’t a patient mistake. It was a HIPPA mistake. I was so close to graduating, and she could have dropped me from the class, but she did something different; all the points I had earned for that part of the semester, she took away. I had to start from scratch, and I had patients assigned to me: Time management, and a little help - not asked for - from my fellow students, on the floor that day came to my rescue, and gave me time to get a huge amount of writing and other papterwork I had already accomplished taken away. She put me back to “0”. But by the end of that clinical, I had made it back and was back where I was when I made the mistake. THAT was a huge stressful situation. It was one of the scariest and most stressful times of my nursing school experience; but, I knew God was there.

After graduation, I entered into correctional nursing - i.e., prison nursing. That decision was the most important, best nursing career decision I ever made!

From there, I worked in the jails - again, major experience with wound care and chronic diseases.

You learn a great deal in correctional nursing. I grew tremendously as a nurse. I learned about myself, my limits, and where I needed to improve.

I would go to work for Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) later. Another special, unique experience I will never forget, and I would not trade it for the world.

No, prison nursing is no more dangerous than “freeworld nursing” as it is called. I could tell you stories about that to ease your mind, but I won’t here.

Unfortunately, I had an at-work freak accident working at the ICE facility and was injured - more than was originally thought. I had to leave June 2024. September 2024, I had both hips replaced six weeks apart. It would take a long time for both hips to heal. There were complications with one surgery, and that took another six months to heal and recover from.

I have been a writer for many years, even before becoming a nurse. I am an author, with another book coming.

Due to not being able to work the floor anymore, I started my own business as a freelance writer.
I write blogs and articles now especially for nurses.
